Research Assistant – Pre-Doctoral Intern (Economics)

About the role

The Vancouver School of Economics at the University of British Columbia seeks a Pre‑Doctoral Research Assistant to support data‑intensive economic research. Working within the Centre for Innovative Data in Economics Research, the intern will gain hands‑on experience in data collection, analysis, and scholarly communication.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee complex data collection, manipulation, storage, and retrieval, including data scraping and big‑data analysis.
• Collaborate with senior faculty to design and execute empirical tests and develop new research projects.
• Conduct literature reviews, write reports, and assist in preparing grant applications.
• Manage day‑to‑day research operations, supervise undergraduate research assistants, and prepare results for presentation or publication.

Required profile

• Undergraduate degree in Economics, Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics or a related field.
• Strong quantitative background and long‑term interest in pursuing PhD‑level research in economics.
• Commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion, and willingness to respect diverse perspectives.

Required skills

• Proficiency in programming languages such as Stata, R, or Python.
• Experience with data scraping, data cleaning, and big‑data analysis.
