Relief Chef – On‑call Community Kitchen

About the role

The Stop Community Food Centre is seeking a reliable Relief Chef to work on an on‑call basis across its three kitchen sites. You will prepare nutritious meals for the community while supporting a team of volunteers in a fast‑paced, mission‑driven environment.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare and serve fresh, healthy meals for up to 200 people per shift, following menu plans and adapting to available ingredients.
• Lead, support, and inspire volunteers during food preparation, service, and cleanup.
• Maintain kitchen organization, cleanliness, and proper shutdown procedures.
• Ensure safe food handling, hygiene, and storage practices at all times.
• Provide coverage for meal programming at all Stop locations, including the Green Barn kitchen when needed.
• Uphold inclusive service delivery aligned with The Stop’s anti‑discrimination and anti‑harassment policies.

Required profile

• Minimum 1 year of experience in a culinary role, capable of preparing large volumes of nutritious food.
• Current Food Handler’s Certification and CPR/First Aid certification.
• Organized, reliable, and able to manage time effectively in a busy kitchen.
• Strong leadership skills with a focus on creating a respectful, welcoming kitchen culture.
• Clear communication abilities for guiding and teaching volunteers.
• Commitment to using food as a tool for community building and social justice.
• Comfort working with diverse people and inclusive environments.
• Physical ability to lift up to 50 lb and stand for extended periods.
• Multilingual ability relevant to local neighbourhoods is an asset.
