Product Design Developer, Hardware

About the role

Join Google’s Platforms and Devices team to design and develop hardware components for consumer products. You will work on integrating optical modules and sensors into tightly‑toleranced enclosures, driving innovation from prototype through high‑volume production.

Key responsibilities

• Design internal and external components, integrating optical modules and sensors into form‑factor enclosures.
• Create and review technical drawings and procurement documents for all components and assemblies.
• Develop design configurations that optimise manufacturing, inventory and order‑flow processes.
• Establish component and module evaluation plans, including First Article Inspection (FAI) and Design of Experiments (DOE) to ensure performance and reliability.
• Oversee supplier and partner collaborations from concept through production, ensuring design intent is met.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent practical experience.
• At least 5 years of experience in consumer electronic product design, manufacturing processes, tooling, and Design for Excellence (DFx) for mass production.
• Proven experience working with suppliers and Joint Development Manufacturer (JDM) partners on mechanical/optical products.
• Experience with at least one CAD program (e.g., NX, SolidWorks) for mechanical design and simulation.
• Strong communication skills to convey design requirements to cross‑functional teams and external partners.
