Postdoctoral Fellow in Biophysical Chemistry (Single‑Molecule)

About the role

The Li Group in the Department of Chemistry at the University of British Columbia seeks a motivated Postdoctoral Fellow to advance cutting‑edge single‑molecule biophysics projects. The role focuses on probing protein mechanics using advanced force spectroscopy techniques.

Key responsibilities

• Design, execute, and analyse single‑molecule force spectroscopy experiments using AFM or Optical Tweezers.
• Purify, characterise, and prepare protein samples for mechanical manipulation.
• Develop and implement automated data‑analysis pipelines (Igor Pro, MATLAB, Python).
• Mentor graduate and undergraduate students in the laboratory.
• Prepare high‑impact manuscripts and present findings at national and international conferences.
• Provide training on specialised instruments and maintain a safe, clean lab environment.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

Required profile

• Ph.D. in Biophysical Chemistry, Biophysics, Physics, Bioengineering, Chemistry or a closely related discipline.
• Demonstrated scientific productivity (first‑author publications or preprints).
• Excellent written and oral communication skills with a collaborative mindset.
• Experience with single‑molecule techniques is desirable but not mandatory.
• Background in molecular biology or protein biochemistry is a plus.

What we offer

• Annual salary range $55,000 – $62,000 CAD.
• Full‑time fixed‑term appointment (12 months) with possible extension.
• Primary work location on the UBC Vancouver Campus.
