Piano Technician – School of Music

About the role

The School of Music at the University of British Columbia seeks a skilled Piano Technician to maintain and service its extensive fleet of over 90 pianos, ranging from practice instruments to concert‑grand pianos used by internationally‑renowned artists. This leave‑replacement position is fixed‑term, variable‑hour and supports teaching, practice, and performance activities across the faculty.

Key responsibilities

• Design, fabricate, and install precision parts to compensate for temperature, humidity, and wear.
• Evaluate new and historic pianos, providing consultative advice on acquisition and selection.
• Adjust multi‑component mechanisms, test and calibrate mechanical and acoustical performance.
• Plan and execute a schedule of tuning, regulation, voicing, preventive maintenance, and repairs for grand and upright pianos.
• Select, order, and manage inventory of acoustic and electronic components within budget constraints.
• Diagnose and resolve mechanical and acoustical issues, documenting work performed.

Required profile

• Professional experience in piano design, rebuilding, and high‑precision maintenance.
• Ability to work closely with faculty, the Keyboard Division, and concert management staff.
• Strong attention to detail and capacity to manage multiple instruments simultaneously.
• Flexibility to adapt schedules to variable hours and academic calendar.
