Periodic Caretaker – City Housing Maintenance

About the role

The City of Hamilton is seeking a Periodic Caretaker to provide general cleaning and pest‑control preparation for CityHousing buildings on a five‑day schedule that includes weekends. This temporary, full‑time position supports a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for residents.

Key responsibilities

• Perform daily cleaning of interiors, including vacuuming, carpet steaming, mopping, floor waxing and buffing.
• Maintain exterior areas by shovelling, salting entrances and power‑washing garbage rooms.
• Handle waste management: empty waste baskets, roll out compactors/recycling bins, schedule bulk‑garbage pick‑up.
• Clean bathrooms, kitchens, meeting rooms, glass doors and elevator interiors.
• Conduct light graffiti removal and fingerprint cleaning on walls and doors.
• Act as keyholder, lock office doors and keep the janitor room tidy.
• Prepare units for pest‑extermination treatments by moving or wrapping furniture.
• Report building deficiencies such as lights out or leaking taps during daily walks.

Required profile

• Previous cleaning experience with knowledge of cleaning methods, materials and equipment.
• Ability to read and follow written and verbal instructions for equipment and chemicals.
• Physically capable of performing caretaking duties and working independently.
• Good written and verbal communication skills for interaction with tenants and staff.
• Understanding of Occupational Health & Safety legislation and MSDS.
• Basic math skills for safe mixing of cleaning agents.
• Valid Class "G" driver’s licence and reliable personal transportation.

Required skills

• Operation of vacuum cleaners, buffing machines and power washers.
• Safe handling and application of cleaning chemicals in accordance with MSDS.
