Facility Operator – Arena Maintenance

About the role

The City of Hamilton is seeking a Facility Operator to support the operation and maintenance of its arena facilities. Working under the supervision of the Senior Facility Operator, you will ensure ice quality, facility security, and overall cleanliness for community sports and events.

Key responsibilities

• Install, remove, and maintain ice surfaces, including cutting, filling cracks, and operating ice resurfacing equipment.
• Maintain consistent ice quality by adjusting temperature, changing blades, and performing preventative maintenance on ice‑related equipment.
• Ensure the security and cleanliness of arena facilities, including snow removal, cleaning restrooms, and general upkeep.
• Set up arenas for various activities such as hockey, lacrosse, dances, and oversee facility use in the absence of the Facility Supervisor.
• Direct part‑time support staff, perform minor building and grounds maintenance, and handle equipment repairs.

Required profile

• Previous arena maintenance experience, preferably as an Assistant Operator.
• Completion of Grade 12 (preferred) and a valid Class “G” driver’s licence.
• Basic Refrigeration Certificate (required) and current Standard First Aid with CPR Level C.
• Ability to work shifts, lift up to 30 lb, and obtain a Vulnerable Sector check.
• Computer proficiency in Peoplesoft and Microsoft Outlook.

Required skills

• Operation of ice resurfacer and ice cutter equipment.
• Basic refrigeration knowledge and maintenance.
• Use of Peoplesoft and Microsoft Outlook for administrative tasks.
• Preventative maintenance of mechanical equipment.
