Legal Counsel

About the role

The Legal Counsel will oversee all legal matters related to BYD’s operations in Canada, acting as a key advisor to senior management and business teams. This role ensures compliance with applicable laws while protecting the company’s commercial interests as it expands in the Canadian automotive market.

Key responsibilities

• Draft, review, negotiate and advise on commercial agreements such as automotive finance, dealer, distributor, fleet sales, supply and procurement contracts, after‑sales service and operational agreements.
• Provide day‑to‑day legal advice to business units, identify and assess legal risks, and deliver commercially oriented guidance to senior management.
• Develop and implement legal risk‑management strategies and monitor regulatory changes affecting the Canadian automotive sector.
• Support corporate compliance programmes, internal policies, governance requirements and deliver compliance training and risk‑awareness sessions.
• Manage and coordinate disputes, claims, litigation and arbitration, liaise with external counsel and oversee outside legal service providers.
• Collaborate with Sales, Finance, Procurement, Network Development, HR and Operations on market expansion, dealer network development and related initiatives.

Required profile

• Legal professional with experience in commercial contracts, regulatory compliance and dispute resolution within the automotive or related industry.
• Ability to provide strategic, practical legal guidance to senior management and cross‑functional teams.
• Strong understanding of Canadian laws and regulations affecting automotive finance, distribution and supply chains.
