Laboratory Attendant 2

About the role

The Laboratory Attendant provides technical support to the environmental testing laboratory at Public Health Ontario. The role involves handling specimens, preparing samples, and ensuring accurate data entry for microbiology and water testing. You will work closely with the Bacteriology and Environmental testing teams to maintain smooth laboratory operations.

Key responsibilities

• Log, sort, label and transport all specimens submitted for testing.
• Prepare and process medical and water samples, including culture setup, staining, extraction and loading analyzers.
• Enter results and data into the PHO Laboratory Information System, maintaining confidentiality and accuracy.
• Operate automated equipment and manual methods to aliquot human samples.
• Load, unload and maintain laboratory analyzers and perform inventory management.
• Clean, disinfect work areas and equipment, and manage stock supplies.
• Answer telephone inquiries and resolve sample‑related issues.
• Assist with quality‑control set‑up and other assigned projects.

Required profile

• Knowledge of medical terminology, laboratory safety procedures and environmental testing processes.
• Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician or equivalent training and experience.
• Strong oral and written communication skills for interacting with team members and external clients.

Required skills

• Proficiency with a Laboratory Information System (LIS) for worksheet preparation and data entry.
• Experience using Microsoft Office applications, especially Word and Excel.
• Ability to operate automated, computer‑driven laboratory equipment.
