About the role
The Instrumentation & Monitoring (I&M) Superintendent leads all instrumentation and monitoring activities for underground construction and tunnelling projects. Reporting to the Underground Construction Lead, this role ensures that geotechnical, structural, environmental and construction‑impact monitoring systems are planned, installed, operated and interpreted in line with project requirements, regulatory approvals and contractual obligations.
Key responsibilities
- Provide overall leadership and direction for all I&M activities related to tunnelling and underground works.
- Supervise, mentor and give technical guidance to I&M coordinators, inspectors and support staff.
- Define roles, responsibilities, priorities and performance expectations for the I&M team.
- Review and approve monitoring strategies, instrumentation layouts, monitoring plans and technical specifications.
- Coordinate installation, maintenance, calibration, operation and removal of geotechnical, structural, settlement, vibration, groundwater and environmental monitoring systems.
- Validate and interpret monitoring data using project databases and digital platforms, flagging alerts and abnormal trends.
- Lead escalation and response processes for exceedances, working with engineering and construction teams to implement mitigation measures.
- Maintain strong relationships with contractors, vendors, consultants, utilities and governmental authorities.
- Facilitate coordination meetings on scope, schedule, data interpretation and compliance status.
Required profile
- Proven experience leading instrumentation and monitoring programmes for underground or tunnelling projects.
- Strong knowledge of geotechnical, structural, settlement, vibration, groundwater and environmental monitoring techniques.
- Ability to supervise multidisciplinary teams and mentor junior staff.
- Excellent coordination skills with contractors, vendors, consultants and regulatory bodies.
- Experience interpreting monitoring data to support construction decision‑making and risk mitigation.
