Executive Director

About the role

The NWT SPCA, the territory’s largest animal welfare organization, is seeking an Executive Director to lead and grow its operations across 33 communities in the Northwest Territories and western Nunavut. This full‑time, permanent position will report directly to the Board of Directors and be responsible for the overall strategic, operational and financial stewardship of the organization.

Key responsibilities

• Provide visionary leadership and manage day‑to‑day shelter operations, including animal intake, health, and departure processes.
• Collaborate with the Board to implement the strategic plan, oversee policy, and ensure compliance with regulatory bodies.
• Recruit, hire, supervise, and mentor staff and volunteers, fostering a high‑performing team culture.
• Maintain shelter facilities, oversee maintenance, and ensure a positive visitor experience.
• Develop and submit grant applications, manage fundraising initiatives, and cultivate donor relationships.
• Oversee communication strategies, act as media contact, and manage social‑media and public outreach.
• Maintain relationships with local veterinarians and the Environmental Health Officer for animal health matters.
• Implement and maintain effective administrative, document‑management, and information‑system workflows.

Required profile

• Proven senior leadership experience, preferably in a non‑profit or animal‑welfare setting.
• Demonstrated success in business planning, fundraising, grant writing, and donor acquisition.
• Strong background in volunteer recruitment, management, and staff supervision.
• Excellent communication skills and experience in public and media relations.
• Passion for animal well‑being and commitment to the mission of improving pet welfare in the North.
