About the role

The Executive Director, Communications and Donor Relations is a senior leader within University Advancement, responsible for shaping and amplifying McMaster University’s institutional narrative to donors and alumni. Reporting to the Vice‑President, University Advancement, this role drives integrated communication strategies that support philanthropic growth and alumni engagement.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the development and execution of cross‑University donor communications and advancement‑related marketing programs.
• Design and oversee multi‑year campaign strategies that advance the university’s fundraising goals.
• Craft a compelling institutional narrative for both philanthropic fundraising and alumni engagement.
• Collaborate with senior executives and diverse stakeholders across the university to ensure consistent messaging.
• Build, mentor, and manage a high‑performing communications team to deliver measurable impact.

Required profile

• Accomplished strategic communications leader with experience in complex, stakeholder‑driven environments.
• Proven track record of leading large‑scale integrated campaigns, brand development, and fundraising communications.
• Experience managing multi‑channel marketing initiatives across print, broadcast, and digital platforms.
• Strong ability to translate complex messages into clear, compelling content.
