Engine Room Assistant – Vessel Operations

About the role
The Engine Room Assistant supports safe and efficient vessel operations by monitoring and maintaining engine room machinery. Reporting to the 1st Engineer, you will work on a dynamic team ensuring the ship’s propulsion and auxiliary systems run smoothly.
Key responsibilities
- Monitor main and auxiliary engines, gearboxes, compressors, winches, and boilers; check oil, water levels, temperatures and pressures.
- Handle chemicals for testing, monitor all pumps, relieve the watch, and conduct regular rounds.
- Perform housekeeping tasks such as cleaning machinery spaces, bilges, painting, and polishing brass fixtures.
- Assist engineers with oil and filter changes, engine adjustments, steering gear checks, leg alignments, and start‑up of main engines and auxiliaries.
- Take lube and fuel oil samples, support major overhauls and refits, and conduct daily fuel soundings and oil tank pumping.
- Execute safety checks, participate in emergency drills, attend safety meetings, receive stores, and repair equipment defects.
Required profile
- STCW Basic Safety (MED A1, MED B2) and Proficiency in Survival Craft (MED B1) certifications.
- Ability to prioritize tasks while maintaining mechanical, electrical, and propulsion systems.
- Mechanical background; Transport Canada Engine Room Rating certificate is an asset.
- Preference for candidates holding a 4th Class Motor Certificate.
