Controller – Financial Operations Lead

About the role

The Controller will lead all financial operations for the Nanaimo Foundation, a registered Canadian charity. This full‑time, on‑site position ensures accurate reporting, strong internal controls, and effective stewardship of donor funds.

Key responsibilities

• Manage general ledger entries and maintain accurate financial records.
• Prepare monthly and annual financial statements in accordance with Canadian accounting standards.
• Oversee budgeting, forecasting, cash‑flow monitoring, and investment activity.
• Maintain internal controls and support audit and compliance requirements.
• Ensure adherence to charitable regulations and nonprofit accounting practices.
• Collaborate with leadership, staff, and the Board to provide financial analysis for strategic decisions.
• Refine financial policies and procedures and assist with grant and fund reporting.

Required profile

• Strong financial accounting and reporting experience, including general ledger management and statement preparation.
• Proficiency with accounting software, spreadsheets, and related financial systems.
• Knowledge of Canadian accounting standards and charity compliance requirements.
• Analytical and problem‑solving abilities with clear communication skills.
• Attention to detail, organizational strength, and ability to meet deadlines.
• Collaborative working style with experience engaging boards or committees.
• Professional accounting designation (CPA or equivalent) preferred.
• Experience in the charitable or not‑for‑profit sector is an asset.
