Chemist I - Smelter Laboratory

About the role

Glencore Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations is hiring a Chemist I for its Falconbridge site in Greater Sudbury, Ontario. This is a full-time, permanent, unionized position at the first full working level of the Chemistry job stream, covering three laboratory service areas: XRF, LECO and atomic absorption analyses. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare samples, set up equipment, calibrate methods and operate analytical instruments that provide process control data for Smelter and Mill operations and metal balances.
• Record, calculate, summarize and report analytical results to the Smelter CCR via PI entry, flagging results outside typical ranges; results directly affect smelter electric furnace flux additions and safe block changes.
• Perform instrument calibrations and sample preparation following analytical methods and QC protocols to keep accuracy and precision within acceptable limits.
• Cover XRF, LECO and atomic absorption analyses and related preparations, plus additional XPS and Mill sample work if required.

Required profile

• Degree in Analytical Chemistry, Chemistry or an acceptable equivalent, plus more than two years of relevant experience.
• Commitment to health, safety, training and continuous improvement.

Required skills

• Modern analytical instruments: XRF, LECO and atomic absorption, and analytical wet chemistry methods.
• Statistical calculations and methods to assess the accuracy, precision and quality of analytical data.
