Bus Operator – Full‑time

About the role

Halifax Transit is seeking full‑time Bus Operators to safely transport passengers across Dartmouth and the greater Halifax region. Operators work on a rotating schedule, handling peak‑period routes and occasional split‑shifts while ensuring reliable service for millions of riders each year.

Key responsibilities

• Report to dispatch at the start of each shift and review operator notices.
• Conduct pre‑trip vehicle inspections and verify compliance with Nova Scotia Motor Vehicle and Motor Carrier Acts.
• Operate the bus using defensive driving techniques, adhering to schedules and traffic regulations.
• Monitor vehicle conditions, report any issues, and maintain safety standards.
• Provide courteous customer service, assist passengers, and manage fare collection, transfers, and pass verification.
• Respond to passenger emergencies, traffic disruptions, and adverse weather conditions.
• Participate in municipal emergency response operations as required.

Required profile

• Valid Class 2 (or equivalent) driver’s licence with a clean record.
• Ability to work flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends and split‑shifts.
• Strong situational awareness and the capacity to remain calm under pressure.
• Commitment to safety, punctuality, and professional conduct.

Required skills

• Defensive driving techniques.
• Knowledge of Nova Scotia traffic legislation and municipal transit policies.
