Associate Lawyer, Defence Litigation (Civil Abuse)

About the role

Our client, a nationally recognised litigation firm, is seeking an Associate Lawyer to strengthen its defence litigation team in Toronto. The role focuses on complex civil abuse and institutional liability matters, offering exposure to high‑profile cases.

Key responsibilities

• Manage a broad portfolio of civil litigation matters from inception through resolution.
• Conduct examinations for discovery, mediations, motions and other litigation proceedings.
• Draft pleadings, motions, correspondence and legal opinions.
• Provide strategic legal advice and litigation support directly to clients.
• Collaborate with senior lawyers on complex and sensitive files.
• Lead a large number of abuse claims while working largely independently.
• Maintain high‑level service to existing clients and assist in business development.

Required profile

• Licensed to practice law in Ontario.
• Approximately 5+ years of civil litigation experience, preferably in defence work.
• Significant exposure to or interest in institutional liability, civil/historical abuse, professional liability or other complex litigation.
• Strong advocacy, drafting and client‑management abilities.
• Ability to work independently and contribute to a collaborative team environment.
