Assistant Professor – Teaching Stream in French Language & Cultural Studies

About the role

The Department of French at the University of Toronto seeks a full‑time Assistant Professor in the Teaching Stream, focusing on French language instruction and cultural studies. The appointment begins on July 1, 2027 and is part of the Faculty of Arts & Science.

Key responsibilities

• Design and deliver undergraduate and graduate courses in French language pedagogy and Francophone literary or cultural studies.
• Develop curriculum, including online materials and lectures, to support diverse learning environments.
• Engage in scholarly teaching activities, such as pedagogical research, conference presentations, and publication of teaching‑related work.
• Contribute to departmental service, advising students, and participating in faculty committees.

Required profile

• PhD in French Studies, Second Language Pedagogy, Education Studies, or a closely related field, completed by the start date.
• Demonstrated excellence in teaching, evidenced by awards, strong teaching dossiers, and positive reference letters.
• Experience teaching in degree‑granting programs, including lecture preparation, curriculum development, and online instruction.
• Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion, with a record of fostering respectful and collegial learning environments.

Required skills

• Native or near‑native proficiency in French.
• Strong command of English suitable for teaching and service in an English‑speaking institution.
