Sustainable Development Officer – Technical Services

About the role

The Sustainable Development Officer will lead the implementation of sustainability initiatives across the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre. Reporting to the Technical Services Director, the role works closely with researchers, laboratory staff, and administrative teams to embed greener practices in daily operations.

Key responsibilities

• Establish and chair a Sustainable Working Group, organizing meetings and creating SOPs.
• Identify, develop, and pilot sustainability projects in laboratories and operational units.
• Support the Green Lab Certification Program in partnership with My Green Lab, including incentives, reporting, and stakeholder communication.
• Organize the annual Freezer Challenge and Earth Day events.
• Audit laboratory environmental practices, conduct site assessments, and provide recommendations for greener operations.
• Track progress, prepare reports, and present the annual sustainability strategy, budget, and cost projections.

Required profile

• Experience working in research or laboratory environments.
• Strong collaboration skills with diverse stakeholders (researchers, program managers, administrative staff).
• Ability to lead groups, coordinate meetings, and develop procedural documentation.
• Excellent communication and presentation abilities.

Required skills

• Knowledge of sustainable laboratory practices and green certification standards.
• Experience conducting environmental audits and site assessments.
• Proficiency in preparing reports and presentations.
