Supply Educational Assistant (CUPE 2331) 2025-2026

About the role

The York Catholic District School Board is hiring a Supply Educational Assistant for the 2025-2026 school year, paid $37.00 per hour. Working under the direction and supervision of the School Principal, the assistant assists teachers in a class or classrooms where a special need has been identified, supporting students' learning through programs directed by the teacher. Educational Assistants do not independently plan, modify or evaluate lessons, nor report on student progress.

Key responsibilities

• Work with staff to give guidance, emotional support and encouragement to students, following the Board's philosophy on mainstreaming.
• Provide opportunities for student success, fostering self-esteem, positive peer and adult interaction and social skills.
• Implement modified programs so students can develop meaningful skills within the school and the community.
• Carry out programs in language, behaviour management and physical management as set by the teacher and/or specialist.
• Prepare materials for programs as required by teachers.
• Assist students with personal and medical care such as dressing, toileting, hygiene, transfers and feeding.
• Assist in student supervision as outlined in the CUPE 2331 collective agreement.
• Accompany and support students in the community during work placements and excursions.

Required profile

• High school graduation plus a 2-year post-secondary education in fields related to child development and special education (e.g. Educational Assistant Diploma, Child & Youth Worker Diploma).
• At least six months of experience, including experience working with children and young adults who have special needs.

Required skills

• Good communication skills; versatility and teamwork.
• First Aid training and Non-Violent Crisis Prevention training are assets; BMS certification and ASD knowledge are assets.
• Ability to attend to the physical needs of students.
