Superintendent, Energy & Utilities

About the role

The City of Hamilton is seeking a senior leader to head its Energy and Utilities program. Reporting to the Director of Corporate Facilities and Energy Management, the Superintendent will guide a professional team in delivering energy conservation, utility procurement, and lifecycle renewal projects across all corporate facilities.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement corporate energy conservation and demand‑management strategies, including utilities procurement and rate negotiations.
• Lead the creation, monitoring, and reporting of the City’s Corporate Energy Policy and key performance indicators.
• Manage capital energy renewal projects, from business case development through budgeting, tendering, and delivery.
• Oversee the City’s Energy Management Software Systems for metering, billing verification, and invoicing.
• Collaborate with internal departments, external suppliers, government agencies, and climate‑change initiatives to advance the Pathway to Net Zero Strategy.
• Direct the implementation of the District Cooling System and support Hamilton Renewable Power generation projects.
• Prepare and manage the operating and capital budgets for the Energy Management Section.
• Provide leadership, training, and safety oversight for all Energy Management staff.

Required profile

• Diploma or degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology, Building Science, or a related field; PMP and/or CEM designation is an asset.
• Extensive experience with building mechanical and electrical systems, including HVAC, chillers, boilers, automation, and energy‑management control systems.
• Proven track record in corporate billing verification, utility accounting, and management of natural‑gas and co‑generation operations.
• Strong knowledge of ASHRAE standards, energy‑efficiency guidelines, building codes, and occupational health & safety regulations.
• Significant managerial experience, including budget preparation, staff supervision, and labour‑relations participation.
