Student Support Assistant – English Language Institute

About the role

The Student Support Assistant (SSA) works within the English Language Institute at the University of British Columbia to enhance the experience of international students. SSAs act as cultural ambassadors, fostering community, belonging, and intercultural exchange through on‑ and off‑campus activities.

Key responsibilities

• Facilitate cross‑cultural interactions and English‑language experiences outside the classroom.
• Support student wellness and language development by organizing workshops, events, and extracurricular activities.
• Provide empathetic communication and assistance to a highly diverse student population.
• Lead the creation of social‑media content, capturing student and instructor stories for marketing and communication purposes.
• Build relationships with students, instructors, and staff to develop a diverse asset bank for future outreach.
• Assist with administrative tasks related to program delivery and event coordination.

• Strong interpersonal and organizational abilities.
• Team‑focused mindset with cultural sensitivity and self‑awareness.
• Ability to work respectfully with non‑native English speakers.
• Good judgement and sensitivity to individual circumstances.
