Scrap Buyer – Procurement of Retail Scrap

About the role

The Scrap Buyer is responsible for sourcing retail scrap in an economical and efficient manner to support steelmaking operations. Reporting to the Regional Raw Materials Manager, the role involves building and maintaining supplier relationships across a diverse network of scrap generators.

Key responsibilities

• Procure retail scrap according to approved plans, maximizing return for the operation.
• Identify, solicit, and maintain relationships with established accounts, casual peddlers, auto wreckers, and other scrap generators.
• Coordinate with transportation, yard inspection, and accounting teams to ensure smooth material flow.
• Review and approve incoming invoices, monitor vendor performance, and maintain accurate purchase records.
• Serve as liaison between yard personnel and suppliers, addressing quality issues and communicating specifications.
• Provide commercial data for inventory analysis and support decision‑making.

Required profile

• 2–3 years of relevant experience, including at least 1 year in scrap buying/selling.
• Knowledge of raw material sources, grades, transportation logistics, and scrap yard operations.
• Self‑starter with strong negotiation, communication, mathematical, and problem‑solving abilities.
• High ethical standards, strong work ethic, and ability to work independently or within cross‑functional teams.
• Willingness to travel weekly to maintain vendor networks and industry contacts.
