Scientific Engineer – Seismic Performance Research

About the role

This position provides technical leadership for numerical research within the ASSET Group, focusing on the seismic performance and design of reinforced and precast concrete buildings. It leads the computational component of multi‑year applied research programs, including development and validation of nonlinear models, coordination of numerical studies, and translation of findings into publications, technical reports, design guidance, and reusable tools.

Key responsibilities

• Lead planning and delivery of the numerical modelling workstream, turning high‑level research objectives into detailed analysis plans, milestones, and technical deliverables.
• Establish and maintain standardized modelling, verification, validation, documentation, data‑management, and technical‑review procedures.
• Coordinate modelling activities performed by graduate students, undergraduates, co‑ops, post‑doctoral fellows, and research staff, assigning tasks, reviewing work, and integrating contributions.
• Provide technical guidance and mentorship in structural analysis, earthquake engineering, OpenSees, model calibration, and interpretation of nonlinear response.
• Synthesize and disseminate research findings through peer‑reviewed publications, technical reports, presentations, and design guidance.
• Support project management, develop research funding proposals, and maintain the ASSET Group website and communication materials.

Required profile

• Undergraduate degree in Engineering or Applied Science with at least one year of related experience (or equivalent education/experience).
• Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion, and willingness to respect diverse perspectives.
• Registration with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC) as a P.Eng. or progress toward registration (preferred).

Required skills

• Advanced proficiency in OpenSees and OpenSeesPy.
• Strong Python programming skills and experience building reusable, version‑controlled computational tools.
• Expertise in nonlinear modelling and performance‑based seismic analysis of reinforced and precast concrete structures.
• Experience with nonlinear static and dynamic analysis, ground‑motion selection, model calibration, validation, and sensitivity studies.
• Knowledge of Canadian seismic design practice (CSA A23.3, NBCC) for high‑rise concrete core‑wall systems.
