Research Assistant/Technician 3 – Equipment Modernization

About the role

The Norman B. Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering at the University of British Columbia seeks a Research Assistant/Technician 3 for a one‑year, term‑limited initiative focused on modernising laboratory equipment and managing its lifecycle. You will work independently while collaborating closely with faculty, technicians, graduate students, and external vendors.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct a comprehensive inventory of all laboratory equipment across research and teaching labs.
• Assess equipment condition, utilization, remaining service life, and maintenance history.
• Identify obsolete or near‑end‑of‑life assets and recommend upgrades or replacements.
• Coordinate vendor engagements, installations, and commissioning of new equipment.
• Develop and implement maintenance and lifecycle management plans.
• Provide partial technical support to departmental laboratories to ensure continuity of operations.

Required profile

• Specialised technical expertise in laboratory equipment management.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Strong collaboration skills with faculty, technicians, graduate students, and vendors.
• Experience in equipment inventory, assessment, and lifecycle planning.
