Recreational Therapist

About the role

The Canadian Mental Health Association Durham seeks a Recreational Therapist to design, deliver, and evaluate therapeutic recreation programs that support the physical, emotional, and social well‑being of clients facing mental health and substance‑use challenges.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct assessments of clients’ leisure interests, abilities, and needs using standardized tools.
• Develop and implement individualized and group recreation therapy plans aligned with treatment goals.
• Facilitate therapeutic activities such as arts, sports, community outings, and wellness programs.
• Document participation, progress, and outcomes, adjusting programs as needed.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to integrate recreation therapy into holistic care.
• Provide on‑call support and backup coverage for clients as required.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Recreational Therapy with at least one year of related experience.
• Active membership in a relevant professional association is an asset.
• Knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Health Care Consent Act, and Ontario ACTT Standards.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills for presenting information and developing care plans.
• Valid Ontario driver’s licence and access to a reliable vehicle.

Required skills

• Proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook).
• Effective internet navigation and research abilities.
