Indigenous Outreach Specialist

About the role

The Indigenous Outreach Specialist provides culturally safe mental health and addictions services to Indigenous individuals, families and communities. This role blends traditional healing practices with clinical assessment, counseling and treatment planning, while supporting organizational cultural safety initiatives.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver client‑centered assessments, crisis intervention, supportive counseling and harm‑reduction services that incorporate Indigenous knowledge and values.
• Facilitate connections with Elders, traditional healers, peer support groups and community‑based wellness initiatives.
• Develop, implement and co‑design culturally relevant prevention and promotion programs addressing mental health and addiction.
• Advise on organizational policies to ensure cultural safety, trauma‑informed care and client self‑determination.
• Collaborate with Indigenous community organizations, friendship centres and health providers to create low‑barrier pathways to care.

Required profile

• Deep understanding of Indigenous cultures, traditions and lived experience.
• Post‑secondary education in Social Sciences, Indigenous Studies, Indigenous Relations or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience or certification in mental health and addictions preferred.
• Strong interpersonal, communication and organizational abilities, with a trauma‑informed approach.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Microsoft 365 applications.
• Experience using electronic medical record systems.
