Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) Operator

About the role

Black & McDonald’s Edmonton Utilities team is seeking a dedicated Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) Operator to join a hard‑working, innovative crew. Reporting to the Project Manager, you will be responsible for safely operating directional drill rigs to install underground utilities while maintaining a strong focus on safety, equipment care, and accuracy.

Key responsibilities

• Safely operate Vermeer D20 x 22 Series 3 and Vermeer 24X40 directional drill rigs in residential and utility‑installation projects.
• Read and interpret blueprints, stakes, signage, and site plans to ensure drilling follows specifications.
• Coordinate daily equipment activities with drivers and crew members, performing pre‑operation safety inspections, fueling, greasing, and basic maintenance.
• Log inspections, maintain equipment records, and perform general labour duties as required.

Required skills

• High school diploma.
• Minimum 5 years experience operating HDD rigs, specifically Vermeer D20 x 22 Series 3 or Vermeer 24X40.
• Class 1 (or 3) licence with air brakes, valid Alberta driver’s licence, and a clean three‑year driving abstract.
• Valid CSTS/Ground Disturbance ticket.
• Physical fitness to handle manual labour in varied weather conditions.
• Construction safety certifications (Confined Space, Fall Arrest, WHMIS, First Aid) are assets.
