Heavy Equipment Operator I – Public Works

About the role

The Department of Highways and Public Works is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator I to join its Transportation team in Stewart Crossing, Yukon. The successful candidate will operate a range of light and heavy machinery to construct and maintain highways, recreational roads, airstrips and related facilities, ensuring safe travel for the public.

Key responsibilities

• Operate dump trucks, loaders and other heavy equipment for construction and maintenance projects across Yukon.
• Perform routine minor maintenance such as greasing, brake adjustments, oil and filter changes.
• Complete pre‑trip and post‑trip safety inspections and adhere to all safety procedures.
• Travel to various sites throughout the territory, often in adverse weather conditions.
• Use personal protective equipment and maintain a personal tool kit on each assignment.

Required profile

• Valid Yukon Class 3 driver’s licence with air‑brake endorsement.
• Ability to obtain a Transportation of Dangerous Goods certificate within six months of hire.
• Demonstrated experience operating dump trucks, loaders or similar heavy equipment.
• Commitment to safety, reliability and teamwork in a remote, outdoor environment.
