Fibre Optic Technician – Part Time

About the role

The Chippewas of the Thames First Nation seeks a part‑time Fibre Optic Technician to install, configure, test, and maintain fibre optic and network infrastructure for residential, business, and community environments.

Key responsibilities

• Install fibre optic cable infrastructure and last‑mile connections in homes and businesses.
• Configure and troubleshoot switches, routers, Wi‑Fi, LANs, and other network equipment.
• Install cable pathway systems such as trays, racks, cabinets, and enclosures.
• Perform fibre line locates, use testing and diagnostic tools, and program newly installed services.
• Label cables, document installations with network tracking software, and produce as‑built diagrams.
• Supervise subcontractors when required and provide end‑user training.
• Participate in on‑call rotations, after‑hours maintenance, and other Public Works projects.

Required profile

• Computer networking training or related coursework.
• Electronic Technician/Technology Certificate (asset).
• Previous telecommunications field experience (strong asset).
• Manufacturer or telecom industry certifications (asset).
• Valid Class “G” Ontario driver’s licence with a clean abstract.
• Clear police records check.

Required skills

• Fibre optic cable installation and testing (visible light source, light meter).
• Configuration and troubleshooting of switches, routers, Wi‑Fi, and LAN equipment.
• Interpretation of work orders, drawings, schematics, and technical specifications.
• Use of network tracking software and creation of as‑built documentation.
• Knowledge of fibre optic cabling standards and telecommunications infrastructure best practices.
