Engineering Technician (Technical Services)

About the role

The Engineering Technician IV is a senior member of the Technical Services Unit at UBC’s Vancouver campus. The role focuses on the design, development, and construction of precision instrumentation and mechanical systems that support teaching and research in the Department of Physics and Astronomy.

Key responsibilities

• Perform advanced machining using conventional and CNC lathes and milling machines, as well as welding, woodworking, and other fabrication techniques.
• Design, modify, and develop specialized research equipment, creating or updating drawings with CAD (SolidWorks) and CAM (MasterCAM) tools.
• Assemble precision mechanical components and systems, ensuring fine tolerances and compliance with safety regulations.
• Maintain and repair instruments, including electrical, vacuum, cryogenic, and pressurised‑gas systems.
• Provide guidance and training to students and staff in machine‑shop practices and oversee the student machine shop.
• Assist with store duties such as receiving orders, managing inventory, and sourcing non‑stock items when required.

Required profile

• Graduation from a technical college, institute or completion of a recognized apprenticeship with at least five years of related experience.
• Commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion and willingness to respect diverse perspectives.
• Red Seal certification or progress toward it is strongly preferred, as is advanced training in CNC machining and fabrication.

Required skills

• Advanced CNC and conventional machining.
• Welding and woodworking fabrication.
• Proficiency with CAD software (SolidWorks) and CAM software (MasterCAM).
• Instrument maintenance, including basic electrical, vacuum, cryogenic and pressurised‑gas work.
• Knowledge of safety regulations and WHMIS compliance.
