Refrigeration Mechanic

About the role

The University of British Columbia is seeking a Refrigeration Mechanic to maintain and operate HVAC and refrigeration systems across student housing and campus facilities. The role ensures optimal performance, minimizes downtime, and upholds safety standards for a variety of mechanical equipment.

Key responsibilities

• Diagnose and repair electrical and mechanical failures in refrigeration and air‑conditioning equipment.
• Perform scheduled preventative maintenance, inspections, and calibration of HVAC, chilled‑water, heat‑recovery, and data‑center cooling systems.
• Install, commission, and test new HVAC machinery such as heat pumps and air conditioners.
• Maintain laboratory environmental chambers, coolers, freezers, and other climate‑control equipment.
• Read schematics, blueprints, and manuals to guide installation, troubleshooting, and repairs.

Required profile

• Red Seal or BCTQ Refrigeration and Air‑Conditioning Mechanic certification.
• 3–5 years of industrial‑setting experience with HVAC/refrigeration systems.
• Valid B.C. Class 5 driver’s licence.
• Ability to work safely with power and hand tools and to follow regulatory codes.

Required skills

• Red Seal Refrigeration and Air‑Conditioning Mechanic certification.
• BCTQ Refrigeration and Air‑Conditioning Mechanic certification.
• Valid B.C. Class 5 driver’s licence.
• 4th Class Power Engineer Certificate (desirable).

• Monthly salary of $7,263 CAD with overtime at double time.
