Director of Care (DOC) – Full‑time

About the role

The Director of Care (DOC) leads a high‑performing team at a long‑term care home, ensuring residents receive safe, compassionate, and resident‑centered care. Reporting to senior leadership, the DOC aligns daily operations with Extendicare’s purpose of helping people live better while meeting accreditation standards and provincial regulations.

Key responsibilities

• Lead, mentor, and retain the resident care team, fostering a collaborative and accountable work environment.
• Develop and deliver education and professional development programs for all care staff.
• Manage staffing levels to meet provincial care hour requirements and oversee the nursing department’s budget, including preparation and variance analysis.
• Ensure compliance with healthcare regulations, licensing, accreditation standards, and labour laws, conducting investigations and action planning as needed.
• Identify and mitigate clinical risks, responding promptly to critical incidents.
• Handle resident, family, vendor, and team feedback with empathy, applying a customer‑service mindset.
• Oversee resident assessments and personalized care planning, guaranteeing high‑quality care delivery.

• Demonstrated leadership experience in long‑term or senior‑care settings.
• Strong commitment to resident safety, quality improvement, and regulatory compliance.
• Proven ability to engage residents, families, and staff to achieve high satisfaction scores.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a focus on empathy.
