Digital Payload Architect – Remote to Montreal

About the role

The Digital Payload Architect will lead the definition, design, and verification of next‑generation regenerative payloads for LEO/MEO satellite missions. The position is based in Montreal with initial remote work while immigration is processed.

Key responsibilities

• Define functional, performance, environmental and security requirements and maintain traceability throughout the project lifecycle.
• Develop the overall digital regenerative payload architecture, including optical/RF ISLs, antenna arrays, digitizers, onboard processing, and high‑speed data‑bus interfaces.
• Lead trade‑studies for ASIC/FPGA/SoC technologies, high‑speed buses and processing algorithms, and integrate emerging technologies into the roadmap.
• Build end‑to‑end signal‑chain models using MATLAB/Simulink, SystemView or Python and run Monte‑Carlo tolerance analyses.
• Author the Payload Verification Master Plan, define test‑automation frameworks and oversee unit, subsystem and payload‑level testing.
• Coordinate with electrical, power, structures, thermal, software, ground segment and mission operations teams to resolve integration issues.

Required profile

• B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace or Physics (M.Sc. preferred) with 12+ years of digital regenerative payload design experience on LEO/MEO missions.
• Strong technical writing and presentation skills; ability to interact with customers, suppliers and senior leadership.
• Hands‑on experience with systems integration, testing and troubleshooting.
• Proficiency with Confluence and JIRA.

Required skills

• MATLAB / Simulink, Python, SystemView.
• High‑speed data‑bus standards: SerDes, SpaceWire, SpaceFibre, Ethernet, CAN, fiber.
• ASIC, FPGA, SoC design and implementation.
• Software‑defined radio (SDR), digital signal processing (DSP), DVB‑RCS/SX protocols.
• Modulation schemes, MPLS, 2G, 5G, NTN.
