Design Engineer – Junior or Intermediate

About the role

New Flyer is seeking a Design Engineer to support the development of electrical systems for its Xcelsior® and Xcelsior CHARGE® transit buses. The role covers the full design lifecycle from concept through production release, focusing on diagnostic tools and system reliability.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and execute innovative diagnostic methods for vehicle electrical systems.
• Monitor and analyze electrical issue trends across fleets and propose mitigation solutions.
• Assess new components for diagnostic capability and address gaps.
• Prepare project status reports and data visualizations.
• Coordinate communication and information flow with internal groups and external partners.
• Provide engineering support to Production, Quality Assurance, and Customer Service.
• Interact with vendors and customers on design issues and manage vendor approvals.
• Conduct diagnostic testing to meet system and vendor requirements.
• Assist designers and draftspersons as directed by the Design Manager.

Required profile

• University degree or technical diploma in electrical engineering or a related field.
• 1‑10 years of experience in electrical engineering or a related discipline.
• Strong teamwork, problem‑solving and communication abilities.
• Ability to multitask and work efficiently in a fast‑paced environment.
• Capacity to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Willingness to travel up to 15 % within the United States.

Required skills

• Control system algorithms and multiplexing logic.
• Functional diagram / structured text development.
• Experience with CAN, J1939 and Ethernet communication protocols.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
