Department Administrator – Linguistics

About the role

The Administrator will manage all administrative functions of the Department of Linguistics and the joint Master of Data Science (Computational Linguistics) program at UBC. This includes strategic planning, operational leadership, and supervision of staff across three campus locations. The role oversees a $4.5 million budget and ensures effective financial, human‑resources, facilities, and information‑technology management.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement budgets, monitor financial transactions, and prepare reports for internal and external agencies.
• Oversee recruitment, appointments, promotions, tenure processes, and staff performance management in accordance with collective agreements.
• Manage departmental space, facilities maintenance, security, health‑and‑safety compliance, and equipment inventory.
• Supervise all departmental staff, including unionized and non‑unionized employees, and coordinate short‑term hires and graduate teaching assistants.
• Provide operational leadership for the Department’s academic and non‑academic activities, including the joint MDS‑CL program.
• Administer research grant budgets, payroll, and compliance for faculty and visiting researchers.
