Course Lecturer – Swahili Language and Culture (AFRI 401)

About the role

The Institute of Islamic Studies at McGill University is seeking a Course Lecturer to teach AFRI 401: Swahili Language and Culture in the Fall 2026 term. This 3‑credit course provides students with foundational skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing Kiswahili, as well as an introduction to Swahili culture and history.

Key responsibilities

• Teach listening, speaking, reading and writing of basic Kiswahili grammar.
• Introduce students to Swahili culture, history and societies of the African Great Lakes and Southeast Africa.
• Prepare and deliver lectures, tutorials and assessment materials for a 3‑credit course.
• Maintain office hours and provide feedback on student performance.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree minimum.
• Demonstrated experience teaching Swahili at the post‑secondary level.
• Authorization to work in Canada and willingness to work in Quebec.
• Proficiency in English for communication and instruction.

Required skills

• Strong command of Kiswahili language and its grammatical structures.
• Knowledge of Swahili cultural, historical and societal contexts.
