About the role

Definity is seeking a Claims Litigation Counsel to independently manage tort litigation matters from inception through trial. The role offers exposure to a diverse portfolio of property damage, construction, bodily injury and subrogated claims, and involves close collaboration with the Claims department on litigation strategy.

Key responsibilities

• Lead all phases of tort litigation, including trials, appeals, contested motions, cross‑examinations and discovery examinations.
• Prepare and file court documents, review and analyze evidence, and interview witnesses.
• Conduct out‑of‑court examinations, mediate disputes, and engage medical, financial and technical experts.
• Oversee surveillance, third‑party support, and client reporting while providing legal opinions and strategic recommendations.
• Negotiate and draft settlement agreements, and manage support staff.
• Advise Definity’s Claims department on litigation strategy and risk management.

Required profile

• 2‑7 years of post‑call civil litigation experience, preferably in insurance litigation.
• Demonstrated ability to handle complex claims, contested motions and appeals; trial experience is a plus.
• Strong ethics, integrity and the capacity to protect confidential information.
• Excellent verbal and written communication, negotiation and analytical skills.
• Ability to manage a full caseload, work under pressure and meet deadlines.
• Law degree (LLB or JD) and a licence to practice law in Ontario.
• Clearance of background and disciplinary checks.
