Communications Specialist III (Media Relations)

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Communications Specialist with a focus on media relations to join our External Communications team on a 12‑month contract covering maternity leave. The role is hybrid, based in North York, and offers the chance to shape strategic messaging for a highly visible, regulated organization.

Key responsibilities

• Lead media relations strategy, including proactive outreach and reactive response to inquiries.
• Research, write, and edit news releases, speeches, executive messaging, and other communications materials.
• Field media inquiries, develop key messages, and coach spokespeople.
• Support crisis communications and issues‑management initiatives.
• Develop communications strategies to protect reputation and manage risk.
• Collaborate cross‑functionally with internal stakeholders and subject‑matter experts.
• Mentor and lead junior team members (2‑3).
• Leverage AI tools such as Copilot to enhance productivity.

Required profile

• 7–10 years of experience in external communications, media relations, or public affairs.
• Exceptional writing ability with fast turnaround.
• Proven track record handling media inquiries and building relationships.
• Strong understanding of issues management in a regulated industry.
• Ability to translate complex topics into clear narratives.
• Experience thriving in fast‑paced, high‑pressure environments.

Required skills

• Use of AI productivity tools (e.g., Copilot).
