Certified Level III Water Distribution & Wastewater Operator

About the role

The City of Brooks is seeking a certified Utility Operator to manage day‑to‑day operations, maintenance and repair of its water distribution, wastewater collection, treatment, irrigation and storm‑water systems. This position is classified as Utility Operator 7 under the CUPE 1032 agreement and may act as supervisor in the foreman’s absence.

Key responsibilities

• Operate, maintain and repair water distribution, wastewater collection, treatment, irrigation and storm‑water infrastructure in compliance with Alberta Environment, Environment and Climate Change Canada and municipal regulations.
• Perform installation, repair and reading of water meters, fire hydrants, valves and related equipment, and manage customer connections and disconnections.
• Supervise Utility Operators 1‑6 and Seasonal Operators when acting as foreman, and respond to after‑hours calls on standby roster.
• Maintain records, facilities, equipment and grounds to approved standards and liaise with provincial health and environmental authorities.
• Operate large equipment, traffic signal and street‑light maintenance, and, when required, airport fuel and instrumentation systems.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Full certification: Wastewater Collection Level III, Water Distribution Level III, Wastewater Treatment Level I.
• Valid Class 3 driver’s licence with Q endorsement and a clean driver’s abstract.
• Standard First Aid, Ground Disturbance, Confined Space, Fall Protection, H₂S and Equipotential Bonding certifications.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, independently and with limited supervision.

Required skills

• Level III Water Distribution certification.
• Level III Wastewater Collection certification.
• Level I Wastewater Treatment certification.
• Class 3 driver’s licence with Q endorsement.
• Standard First Aid and related safety certifications (Ground Disturbance, Confined Space, Fall Protection, H₂S, Equipotential Bonding).
• Advanced Excel and Microsoft Office proficiency.
