Associate Product Designer – Construction Toys (6-Month Contract)

About the role

Mattel's Montreal campus, the Mattel Building Sets Campus, develops Mattel Brick Shop and Mega Bloks products for a global audience. This 6-month contract position sits under the Manager, Product Design, and covers construction toys from ideation to production follow-up, including the delivery of complete technical production specifications. The Associate Product Designer works with the Graphics, Engineering and Marketing teams.

Key responsibilities

• Ideate new construction toy concepts
• Carry out product development activities such as sketches, block constructions, formal and functional research, and definition of decorations and colours
• Build 3D study models (mock-ups and prototypes)
• Create presentation images and product submissions
• Take part in cost and feasibility analysis of products
• Develop new 3D parts ready for injection and plan images for instruction booklet assembly
• Present concepts formally and work with engineers, project managers, brand managers and graphic designers

Required profile

• DEC or bachelor's degree in industrial design or equivalent experience
• 1 to 3 years of relevant experience
• Passion for design and interest in the construction toy industry
• Comfortable in French; English is an asset
• Attention to detail, aesthetics, initiative, teamwork and respect for deadlines and budgets

Required skills

• Hand sketching and model making
• Powerful use of 3D-2D software (SolidWorks, C4D, Adobe Suite)
• Knowledge of plastics is an asset
• Interest in pop culture, video games, figurine collecting and cinema
