Animal Care Technician

About the role

The Animal Care Technician (ACT) provides high‑level care for small laboratory animals within UBC's Modified Barrier Facility. Working closely with clinical veterinarians and animal care teams, the ACT ensures a clean, well‑stocked environment that supports cutting‑edge animal‑based research.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain daily cleanliness of the facility and manage supplies of food and bedding.
• Monitor animal health and welfare, adhering to CCAC and UBC Animal Care Committee protocols.
• Operate computerized animal anesthesia machines, diagnostic laboratory equipment, and specialized surgical tools.
• Utilise digital environmental monitoring systems to ensure optimal housing conditions.
• Collaborate with researchers, veterinarians, and other technicians in a time‑sensitive, regulated setting.

Required profile

• Experience working with small laboratory animals in a research environment.
• Strong understanding of animal husbandry best practices and regulatory compliance.
• Ability to follow detailed standard operating procedures and maintain accurate records.
• Commitment to workplace safety and use of personal protective equipment.
