Airport Firefighter – Whitehorse

About the role

The Department of Highways and Public Works is seeking qualified individuals to join the Airport Firefighter Team at Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport. This permanent role focuses on fire rescue, fire suppression, fire prevention, and supporting health, safety, and security programs within the airport environment.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct fire rescue operations and fire suppression at the airport.
• Implement fire prevention measures and safety inspections.
• Support fire, health, safety, and security initiatives across airport facilities.
• Operate rescue firefighting vehicles and related equipment.
• Maintain incident command and communication procedures during emergencies.

Required skills

• Operation of rescue firefighting vehicles and equipment.
• Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and self‑contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
• Incident command and emergency communication procedures.
• Level 1 Structural Firefighter Certification (NFPA 1001 or equivalent).
• Current Standard First Aid, CPR/AED, and Basic Life Support (BLS) with O₂ airway management.
• Experience in structural firefighting; aircraft firefighting experience is an asset.
• Class 3 driver’s licence with air endorsement or equivalent transportation security clearance (TSC).
• Airport firefighter fitness appraisal and airside vehicle operator permit (AVOP) within required timeframes.
