About the role

The Department of Biology, led by Professor Jackie Vogel at McGill University, is hiring a Student Research Assistant to support ongoing yeast genetics projects. The role involves hands‑on laboratory work, data collection, and assisting senior researchers in experimental design.

Key responsibilities

• Construct yeast strains following established protocols, including gene deletions and insertions.
• Isolate plasmid DNA from bacterial cultures for downstream applications.
• Perform yeast transformation procedures to introduce genetic mutations.
• Dissect spores to identify haploid progeny from diploid yeast crosses.
• Extract genomic DNA from yeast cells for sequencing and analysis.

Required profile

• Strong attention to detail and reliability in laboratory procedures.
• Motivated to learn and work collaboratively within a research team.
• Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, in English.
• Must be a current McGill student approved by the Work‑Study Program.
• Completed relevant coursework such as BIOL 202 Genetics and BIOL 301.
