Patent Coordinator

About the role

Gowling WLG is seeking a Patent Coordinator to support the worldwide prosecution of domestic and foreign patents. The role is central to ensuring accurate and timely filing of patent applications and maintaining smooth communication with internal teams and external associates.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare and finalize patent filing materials for the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) and the United States Patent Office (USPTO).
• Draft, review, and send filing instructions to foreign associates across multiple jurisdictions.
• Coordinate with professionals to ensure abstracts, specifications, claims, and drawings meet jurisdictional requirements.
• Review and prepare client letters, assignments, petitions, powers of attorney, and inventor declarations.
• Screen incoming correspondence post‑filing for Canadian, US, and foreign applications.
• Relay examiner reports and office letters, and coordinate drafting and filing of submissions, requests for examination, amendments, fee payments, and responses.
• Oversee patent validations, appeals, and monitor daily diaries and due case reports.
• Manage multiple deadlines, communicate with stakeholders, and ensure timely completion of tasks.
• Perform other duties as required.

Required profile

• Law Clerk or Legal Administrative Diploma from a recognized post‑secondary institution.
• Excellent attention to detail and strong prioritisation abilities.
• Genuine interest in intellectual property law and patent prosecution.
