Intermediate Fire Protection Designer

About the role

Design Works Engineering, a multi‑disciplinary engineering firm, is looking for a motivated Intermediate Fire Protection Designer to join its growing Edmonton office. You will support the Fire Protection team by delivering compliant, cost‑effective fire safety solutions for commercial, residential and industrial projects.

Key responsibilities

• Design and specify fire suppression, alarm, smoke management and emergency lighting systems while ensuring compliance with NFPA and provincial codes.
• Prepare detailed engineering drawings and specifications, review client requirements, and produce technical reports to support design submissions.
• Review shop drawings, conduct site inspections, and perform fire risk assessments, egress modelling and fire dynamics simulations.
• Collaborate with cross‑functional project teams to integrate fire protection systems with other building systems.

Required profile

• University degree in Fire Protection Engineering or Mechanical Engineering with a fire protection focus, plus a minimum of 5 years’ design experience for commercial, multi‑family or industrial buildings.
• Strong communication skills and thorough knowledge of NFPA, national and provincial fire codes.
• Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects and meet tight deadlines.
