Director, Government Relations

About the role

The Director, Government Relations reports to the Vice President of External Affairs and leads the development and execution of AltaLink’s engagement strategy with municipal, provincial and federal governments. This senior position provides strategic advice on emerging policy, regulatory and fiscal issues, ensuring alignment with the company’s business objectives.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement a government relations strategy aligned with corporate, regulatory and business priorities.
• Monitor emerging political, legislative, regulatory and fiscal risks and translate them into actionable advice.
• Ensure consistency between policy positions, regulatory filings and external engagement.
• Lead AltaLink’s participation in industry coalitions, trade associations and multi‑stakeholder initiatives.
• Identify and pursue strategic partnerships to advance shared policy objectives.
• Represent AltaLink in meetings with ministers’ offices, senior officials, regulators, municipalities and industry counterparts.
• Manage and develop a team of professionals, supporting their career growth and aligning their efforts with company goals.
• Collaborate with cross‑functional leaders on policy files and initiatives.

Required profile

• Extensive experience in government relations, public policy or regulatory affairs, preferably within the energy or utilities sector.
• Proven ability to anticipate and assess political and regulatory developments.
• Strong strategic thinking and advisory skills for senior leadership.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder‑management capabilities.
• Leadership experience managing and developing high‑performing teams.
