Apprentice Millwright

About the role

The Apprentice Millwright will join the Student Housing and Community Services (SHCS) team at UBC, learning to install, maintain, inspect and repair a wide range of campus machinery and equipment. This hands‑on apprenticeship provides practical training in mechanical systems while supporting safe and efficient operations across multiple facilities.

Key responsibilities

• Fabricate and install new university machinery and components using lathes, milling machines and other shop tools.
• Perform inspections, preventative maintenance and troubleshooting of HVAC, pumping, material‑handling and laboratory ventilation systems.
• Diagnose equipment failures via the Building Management System and carry out repairs or replacements.
• Rebuild compressors, pumps, pneumatic/hydraulic circuits and conduct performance testing and commissioning.
• Weld, braze, solder and align components using laser tools, dial indicators, calipers and micrometers.
• Read and interpret schematics, blueprints and operating manuals to guide installations and repairs.
• Coordinate rigging and lifting operations and communicate with customers and trade partners.

Required profile

• Enrolled in or recently completed a recognized millwright apprenticeship program.
• Strong mechanical aptitude and attention to detail.
• Willingness to work on‑site in various SHCS buildings and follow safety and environmental regulations.
