Senior School University and Career Guidance Counsellor

About the role

The Senior School University and Career Guidance Counsellor joins the faculty at St. John’s School to support students in Grades 6‑12 with personalised post‑secondary planning, career education and transition services. The role collaborates with the counselling team and senior school staff to deliver programming, advice and resources that help students navigate university applications, scholarships and career pathways.

Key responsibilities

• Organise university visits, fairs, career days and information nights for students and parents.
• Provide one‑on‑one guidance on university planning, course selection, scholarship opportunities and graduation requirements.
• Maintain the University Advising web page, records of applications, acceptances, scholarships and a noticeboard of post‑secondary opportunities.
• Assist students with resumes, interview techniques, essays and reference letters for university and scholarship applications.
• Plan, deliver and assess Senior School Career Education courses aligned with the BC curriculum.
• Support student wellbeing through holistic, student‑centred approaches and collaborate with teachers, families and community agencies.
• Manage the university advising budget, evaluate the program annually and report to the Senior School Principal.
• Participate in professional development, conferences and maintain links with post‑secondary institutions in North America, the UK and Europe.

Required profile

• Valid BC Teaching Certification and legal entitlement to work in Canada.
• Knowledge of International Baccalaureate programmes (MYP, DP) and BC curriculum.
• Experience delivering university and career guidance in a senior school setting.
• Strong organisational, administrative and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to build respectful relationships with students, parents and staff.
• Commitment to inclusion, student wellbeing and the school’s mission and values.
