Youth Support Worker

About the role

The Youth Support Worker (YSW) reports to the Manager of Education and collaborates with the Directors of Health, Recreation and Culture & Heritage to deliver individualized support to youth in Metlakatla and surrounding communities. Using trauma‑informed and harm‑reduction approaches, the YSW helps young people develop life‑skills, wellness plans and pathways to independence.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement personalized life‑skills and wellness plans for each youth.
• Provide one‑on‑one assistance with personal hygiene, cooking, food security and living‑space maintenance.
• Facilitate group and individual life‑skills programming and workshops.
• Support career development through job interview preparation and employment readiness activities.
• Coordinate with social workers, RCMP, Ministry representatives, schools and the CLH department to secure income assistance, counseling and cultural supports.
• Travel between Metlakatla, Prince Rupert and local schools to deliver services and maintain regular reporting.
• Respond promptly to crisis situations, activate appropriate resources and document actions.
• Maintain accurate records of youth plans, progress, medication schedules and program participation.
• Advocate for youth and ensure consistent access to health, recreation and education programs.

Required profile

• Experience providing direct support to youth in individual or group living settings.
• Knowledge of trauma‑informed care and harm‑reduction principles.
• Ability to travel within the region and work across multiple sites.
• Strong communication skills for liaising with social workers, law enforcement, schools and community partners.
• Capacity to handle emergency and crisis situations with appropriate response protocols.
• Commitment to cultural sensitivity and supporting Indigenous youth.
